September Newsletter

Hello PS 261 families!

Another school year is about to begin! I can't believe I am about to start my 9th year of teaching. Some of you I will be meeting for the first time over the next few weeks, others I have known for quite some time. Either way, I am looking forward to what this new year will bring and, with my new website, being able to effectively communicate what is happening in our music class. Here are some things your child will be doing in music class this month.

Pre-K

I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know my Pre-K students for the first time. In September, our focus is on sounds and the sounds we can make with our voices. We'll also be working on whole group activities like making a circle, and playing circle games.

Kindergarten

During September, we will be focusing on sounds and the sounds we can make with our voices. Using our singing voices, we will be able to sing the "Hello Song", "Down by the Bay" and "Oats, Peas, and Beans". We will also be working on our circle making in class so that we will be able to play ciricle games. Finally, we will be stuying the concept of beat and learn how to keep a beat while we sing a known song.

First Grade

In September, we will be reviewing some of the concepts we studied in Kindergarten. I'll be looking to see if they can sing a song and keep a steady beat, sing a song and perform a basic movement, perform a basic rhythm on rhythm sticks, and write out a basic rhythm that is clapped to them.

Second Grade

In September, we will be reviewing the concepts taught in first grade. I'll be looking to see if they can recall the solfege sounds SOL, LA, and MI, their ability to write and perform a suggested rhythm, and their ability to effectively use their singing voice.

Chorus

Auditions for new Chorus members will be taking place during the month of September. Please click on the Chorus tab of the home page for more information.

If you ever have any questions, feel free to contact me. Have a great start to the school year!
